The structure of adiabatic shear bands in a titanium alloy
Acta Metallurgica, 1985Abstract A study has been made of the structure of adiabatic shear zones in Ti-6% Al-4% V with different parent microstructures, resulting from ballistic impact of steel spheres. Metallographic examination of well-developed shear bands showed that they consisted of zones of intense shearing distortion of the original microstructure, modified by the ...

On the role of strain gradients in adiabatic shear banding
Acta Mechanica, 1995The effect of higher order strain gradients on adiabatic shear banding is investigated by considering the simple shearing of a heat-conducting thermoviscoplastic material with a gradient-dependent flow stress. The competition between the gradient-dependent plastic flow and heat conduction, and their influence on the shear band width and structure are ...

Adiabatic Shear Bands in One Dimension
1989Abstract : This report summarizes the progress made at the Ballistic Research Laboratory to date in analyzing and understanding the dynamical processes that cause the formation of adiabatic shear bands and the influence of various physical parameters on their formation. Adiabatic shear.

Recrystallization kinetics within adiabatic shear bands
Acta Materialia, 1997Abstract Small recrystallized grains (0.1-0.2 μm diameter) are observed to form in adiabatic shear bands of shock-prestrained copper. However, the mechanism for recrystallization under the high strain, high-strain-rate conditions within shear bands is somewhat unclear.

Evolution in the Patterning of Adiabatic Shear Bands
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2002The evolution of multiple adiabatic shear bands was investigated in stainless steel (different grain sizes: 30 and 140 μm), titanium, and Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy through the radial collapse of a thick‐walled cylinder under high‐strain‐rate deformation (∼104 s−1) and different global strains(up to 0.9).

Approximate analysis for the formation of adiabatic shear bands
Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1990Abstract Parametric solutions are given for the formation of adiabatic shear bands in the context of the onedimensional nonlinear theory where inertia and elasticity are ignored. When heat conduction is also ignored, the exact solution reduces completely to a sequence of quadratures.

On adiabatic shear band determinations by surface observations
Scripta Metallurgica, 1980Abstract : Two cracking mechanisms, adiabatic shear band cracking and ductile dimpled shear cracking, have been observed in hollow, right circular cylinders of AISI 4340 steel, which were explosively expanded in a quick-stop containment apparatus. It is concluded that distinction of cracking mechanisms cannot be made without the use of metallographic ...

Some Aspects of Adiabatic Shear Bands
1987A one dimensional continuum formulation for the initiation and growth of adiabatic shear bands is reviewed, including some remarks on the underlying assumptions. A short description of some perturbation calculations introduces the idea of stress collapse and band formation as a bifurcation from homogeneous deformation.
