Numerical simulation and physical understanding of a locally initiated sea fog event over the eastern Yellow Sea with a transition of air–sea temperature difference

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Unexpected sea fog in the west coast of South Korea had a huge impact on the transportations in the Seoul–Incheon metropolitan area. We reproduced successfully the formation and evolution of a sea event with a transition of air–sea temperature difference using the Weather Research and Forecasting model.

Gradient structure produces superior dynamic shear properties

open access: yesMaterials Research Letters, 2017
We report that gradient-structured twinning-induced plasticity steels have much superior dynamic shear properties over homogeneous nanostructured (NS) counterparts.

Metallurgical Analysis of Chip Forming Process when Machining High Strength Bainitic Steels

open access: yesJournal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing, 2019
In the following work, we propose a metallurgical approach to the chip formation process. We focus on a turning application of high strength steel in which chips are produced by adiabatic shear bands that generate cutting force signals with high ...

On dynamic response and fracture-induced initiation characteristics of aluminum particle filled PTFE reactive material using hat-shaped specimens

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2020
Dynamic response and fracture-induced initiation characteristics of aluminum particle filled polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/Al) reactive material was studied in two experimental configurations: (a) thin disks for compression and (b) hat-shaped specimens ...

The role of the synoptic‐scale conditions in driving fog and mist during the FATIMA July 2022 Sable Island Field program

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
ERA5 hourly 325‐m and 1512‐m (a) convergence and (b) vertical motion (actually pressure change with sign reversed to compare with convergence) over Sable Island around the time of an event. The mist (green) and fog (red) occurrences at the surface station are shown at the bottom of the figures. A 325‐m fitted line convergence was positive for the first

Dynamic deformation evolution of the adiabatic shear bands in zirconium alloy formed at a strain rate of about 2300 s-1

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2018
Deformed microstructure of the adiabatic shear bands in zirconium alloy impacted by split Hopkinson pressure bar at a strain rate of about 2300 s-1 was characterized systemically.

New views of some invariants associated with the Cartesian 2D velocity gradient tensor

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Vorticity and divergence of horizontal flow are fundamental quantities in meteorology; both are linear functions of the four elements of the 2D velocity gradient tensor and both are formally unchanged under coordinate rotation. We explore four quadratic functions of the elements that are geometrically invariant in this sense, finding some novel ...

Adiabatic shearing failure of explosively driven metallic cylinder shell, from experiments to simulation

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2015
The adiabatic shear bands (ASB) of the tubular metal specimens expanded explosively have been studied by many researchers in the recent years. The onset and evolutions of the multiple shear failure of metal cylinder under explosive loadings are affected ...

Advanced Technologies for Characterizing and Detecting Battery Thermal Failure: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 33, 15 June 2026.
Illustration of advanced characterization techniques to predict battery thermal failure. ABSTRACT Energy storage is essential in accelerating the global transition toward clean and sustainable energy across various sectors. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have become increasingly significant for energy storage due to their high energy density, low ...
