Body Composition and Exercise Performance in Youth With a Fontan Circulation: A Bio‐Impedance Based Study

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2020
Background Adults with a Fontan circulation tend to have myopenia and elevated adiposity when measured by dual energy x‐ray absorptiometry. Bioelectrical impedance analysis is an alternative validated approach to assess body composition.

Special Article: Physical Activity, Physical Fitness, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Childhood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In adults, physical activity and exercise training are associated with reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, a reduced likelihood of developing adverse cardiovascular risk factors, and improved insulin sensitivity.

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Integrative Neuromuscular Training for Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) often exhibit early deficits in muscle and movement competence, which can compromise long‐term health. Integrative neuromuscular training (INT), a multifaceted approach combining fundamental movement activities with strength exercises, may help address these deficits during ...

An interval of the obesity QTL Nob3.38 within a QTL hotspot on chromosome 1 modulates behavioral phenotypes. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
A region on mouse distal chromosome 1 (Chr. 1) that is highly enriched in quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling neural and behavioral phenotypes overlaps with the peak region of a major obesity QTL (Nob3.38), which we identified in an intercross of ...

Texture analysis of vertebral bone marrow using chemical shift encoding–based water-fat MRI:a feasibility study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Summary This feasibility study investigated the spatial heterogeneity of the lumbar vertebral bone marrow using chemical shift encoding–based water-fat MRI. Acquired texture features like contrast and dissimilarity allowed for differentiation of pre- and

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
