2016The category of adjectives consists of lexical items that characteristically represent properties of entities such as dimension, age, color, speed, etc. A full-fledged adjective phrase is typically composed of an adverb and an adjective. This chapter mainly deals with the modifying function of adjectives and adjective phrases.

Abstract The lexical class of adjective is in many ways ideal for the typological study of parts-of-speech systems across languages. It is neither as common or consistent as the classes of noun and verb, which are found in virtually every language, nor are adjectives as language specifically idiosyncratic as adverbs or ideophones.

Most adjectives can be used attributively and predicatively. After a short introduction on these functions, it is investigated which other parts of speech can occupy the syntactic position of an attributively used adjective. The results of this lead to further explorations concerning the structure of the noun phrase.
