Mechanics of Telson Ridges in Mantis Shrimp for Impact Analysis and Implications for Bioinspired Elastic Shell Designs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The mantis shrimp telson reveals how ridged biological shields control deformation under impact. Inspired by this architecture, telson‐inspired ridged curved shells transform ridge geometry and macroscopic curvature into bidirectional snap‐through, tunable stiffness, and enhanced hysteretic energy dissipation for multifunctional architected materials ...

H∞ Control for 2D Singular Continuous Systems

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This paper considers the problem of admissibility and admissibilization of 2D singular continuous systems described by the Roesser model. A necessary and sufficient admissibility condition is first proposed for 2D singular continuous systems in terms of ...

After Zigzagging Between Extremes, Finally Common Sense? Will Belgium Return to Reasonable Rules on Illegally Obtained Evidence?

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Direito Processual Penal, 2021
In the absence of statutory rules on the matter, Belgian courts traditionally applied a strict exclusionary rule for illegally gathered evidence and its fruits.

Limits to the Hall Effect and Other Nonreciprocal Effects in Three‐Dimensional Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Comprehensive and fundamental bounds on nonreciprocal effects in three‐dimensional metamaterials are derived. They reveal that the effective Hall mobility cannot exceed the largest constituent mobility, that, under certain conditions, the Verdet constant cannot be enhanced, and that, for constituents with Hall coefficients of the same sign, the largest

Programmable Variable‐Stiffness Multilayer Elastomer Composites With High‐Aspect‐Ratio Low‐Melting‐Point Alloy Inclusions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
High‐aspect‐ratio low‐melting‐point alloy inclusions are embedded within multilayer silicone laminates to create thermally programmable stiffness. Sequential activation of alloy‐rich layers produces four distinct mechanical states and reconfigures tendon‐driven actuator trajectories under the same load.

Topological Classification of Admissible Reconstruction Operations

open access: yesInternational Journal of Topology
We develop a topological classification of admissible reconstruction operations in generative systems where extended structure is built through repeated local extension subject to compatibility constraints.

A Constraint‐Based Analytical Framework for Design‐Space Analysis and Material Screening of Tubular Multilayer Dielectric Elastomer Pumps for Extracorporeal Circulatory Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A constraint‐based analytical framework maps the coupled effects of material properties, structural parameters, and operating conditions in tubular dielectric elastomer pumps for extracorporeal circulatory applications. The approach defines performance boundaries through mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic constraints and identifies feasible design ...

Strong Admissibility Revisited [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In the current paper, we re-examine the concept of strong admissibility, as was originally introduced by Baroni and Giacomin. We examine the formal properties of strong admissibility, both in its extension-based and in its labelling-based form. Moreover,

Microscale 3D‐Printed Digital Strain Switches for Embedded Mechanical Computation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Microscale 3D‐printed strain switches on flexible films convert deformation into native digital signals at geometry defined thresholds. A closed form model predicts switching from 3000 to 15 000 microstrain and is validated across 110 devices. Reliable ohmic closure and strain activated AND, OR, and XOR logic point toward low‐power mechanical ...

Asymmetry in Skipping Enhances Viability Against Control Input Noise

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Quadruped animals use asymmetric galloping gaits at high speeds, yet the functional role of this asymmetry remains unclear. This study shows that left–right asymmetry in touchdown angles enhances robustness to control noise. Using a simple two‐legged locomotion model and viability theory, it demonstrates that asymmetric skipping substantially enlarges ...
