Some adrenal gland diseases may affect fertility, mainly when related to certain hormonal excesses, particularly in women. Although clinical and laboratory diagnoses play a main role in this setting, diagnostic imaging may contribute to the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of such diseases.

Addison's disease typically results from the autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex and requires lifelong replacement with glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Main symptoms are non-specific and, therefore, often overlooked or misleading. Patients are frequently not diagnosed until experiencing a life-threatening adrenal crisis.

Computed tomography of the adrenal glands in Addison's disease

In 30 cases of chronic adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) CT of the adrenal glands was performed using a fourth generation scanner and a 2 mm slice thickness. Adrenal glands were visualized in all the cases. In 26 patients the adrenals were atrophied; the adrenal shape was abnormal in 21 patients.
