Abstract The long arm of the Adriatic Sea extends for c.800 km northwards with an average breadth of 175 km. In the south at its narrowest point the Straits of Otranto are 75 km wide, while further north the screen of islands along the east (Dalmatian) shore reduces the width of open space to c.150 km.
