Thermal Stress Is Associated With Fragmentation of Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica Meadows

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.
By combining a physiological model of cumulative thermal stress with AI‐based seagrass mapping, we show that chronic sublethal warming is associated with fragmentation of Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica meadows and increased regression risk by 2100. ABSTRACT Posidonia oceanica meadows, which underpin Mediterranean coastal ecosystems, are undergoing ...

Enhanced Nickel Uptake in Mixed Plant Communities of Hyperaccumulator and Non‐Hyperaccumulator Species Under Nickel Stress

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 4, July 2026.
This study investigated how species richness and biotope space affect phytoextracted nickel mass. Growing monocultures and bicultures of two endemic species across a nickel stress gradient revealed that bicultures generally enhanced soil nickel bioavailability, aboveground biomass, and nickel phytoextraction compared to monocultures.

Who Is Smuggler? Contradictory Positions and Unsettled Roles in Smuggling Assemblage on the Balkan Route

open access: yesGlobal Networks, Volume 26, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT This article reconceptualizes migrant smuggling along the Balkan Route through the lens of the smuggling assemblage, which captures the fluid, relational and context‐dependent nature of clandestine mobility. Based on multi‐sited ethnographic fieldwork between 2020 and 2023 across six countries, including 85 semi‐structured interviews and ...

Evolution of Crematogaster sordidula (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) Ants in the Mediterranean Region During Plio‐Pleistocene Climatic Changes

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 55, Issue 4, Page 615-638, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding insect responses to global climate change involves identifying strategies used during past climate oscillations. Phylogeography offers a powerful framework to unravel how historical climatic and geological events have shaped the spatial genetic patterns of species, providing critical insights into evolutionary processes, whereas ...

High‐Resolution Climate Simulations Over the Eastern Mediterranean Black Sea Region Using the Pseudo‐Global Warming Method With a CMIP6 Ensemble: Wind Energy Resource Availability

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 12, 28 June 2026.
Abstract Weather‐dependent renewable energy resources are already vulnerable to climate change. High‐resolution regional climate simulations are essential for accurately assessing how climate change may impact wind energy resources, particularly in regions with complex topography.
