Electrified Damage in Motion Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The electrified damage in motion systems is a fundamental framework presenting the degradation pathway arising from the coupling of electrical energy transport with mechanical contact and interfacial chemistry. The framework positions electrified damage as a distinct degradation regime with unique characteristic surface morphologies and failures of ...

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow past a trailing edge and the associated noise generation

open access: yes, 2008
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are conducted of turbulent flow passing an infinitely thin trailing edge (TE). The objective is to investigate the turbulent flow field in the vicinity of the TE and the associated broadband noise generation.

Hot‐Film and Calorimetric Methods With Transient Heating for Measurement of High Biofluid Flow Rate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Accurate measurement of biofluid flow rate is vital for clinical diagnostics. We propose a transient heating strategy using short thermal pulses and peak temperature tracking to enhance the flow sensitivity of the hot‐Film and calorimetric methods. Simulations show how optimal heating time maximizes sensitivity across flow rates.

Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Window into the Early Stages of Complex Material Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid‐phase transmission electron microscopy enables direct observation of nucleation and growth processes in solution. This review is dedicated to the remembrance of Helmut Cölfen and highlights recent studies on complex materials—oxides, biominerals, organic–inorganic crystals—which were central to his research activity. It summarizes key milestones,

Self‐Sintering Ionogel Binder for Flexible, Recyclable, and Healable Printed Giant Magnetoresistive Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Electronic waste has emerged as a major environmental challenge, driven by the massive consumption and a limited lifetime of modern electronic devices, stimulating the development of sustainable electronics. Here, an all‐biomaterial gelatin‐choline‐citric acid ([Ch][CA]) ionogel is developed as an active binder to realize self‐sintered ...

Investigation into noise emitted by bluff bodies with large roughness

open access: yes, 2013
A set of wind tunnel experiments were performed to study the effect of large surface roughness on circular cylinder noise, with the goal of improving landing gear noise predictions. Roughness increases vortex shedding noise levels, and shifts the peak to
