Isolation, decomposition, and mechanisms of the aerodynamic nonlinearity and flow field phenomenology of structure-motion-induced dynamics in fluid–structure interactions

Physics of Fluids, 2023
This study focuses on the aerodynamic nonlinearity and flow field phenomenology of structure-motion-induced dynamics in fluid–structure interactions (FSI), which is essential for response prediction. Through dynamic-meshing large-eddy simulations with near-wall resolution, the nonlinear aerodynamic damping in the still wind has been isolated by forced ...

Fluid–structure coupling mechanism and its aerodynamic effect on membrane aerofoils

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2018
Fluid–structure interactions of elastic membrane aerofoils are investigated at Reynolds number $Re=10\,000$ and low angle of attack. The dynamics of the fluid and membrane coupled system are solved using direct numerical simulation (DNS), where the geometry and boundary conditions were applied using a boundary data immersion method.

Aerodynamic Shape Optimization Using “Turbulent” Adjoint And Robust Design in Fluid Mechanics

2015
This article presents adjoint methods for the computation of the first- and higher-order derivatives of objective functions \(F\) used in optimization problems governed by the Navier–Stokes equations in aero/hydrodynamics. The first part of the chapter summarizes developments and findings related to the application of the continuous adjoint method to ...

Spectral methods and their implementation to solution of aerodynamic and fluid mechanic problems

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 1987
AbstractFundamental concepts underlying spectral collocation methods, especially pertaining to their use in the solution of partial differential equations, are outlined. Theoretical accuracy results are reviewed and compared with results from test problems.

Flashback: 30 Years Numerical Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics in Japan, other Asian Countries and the Western Pacific Rim

2009
We glance back at the history of CFD in Asia, especially in Japan. It is quite clear that contributions from Asian countries have increased tremendously in the last 20 to 30 years of CFD research. Advanced supercomputers have been timely developed by Japanese industries and a good environment of CFD research using High Performance Computers has been ...

Fluid Mechanical Refracting Gas Prism and Aerodynamics of E - Beam Sustained Discharge in Supersonic Flow, Both Applicable to Laser Technology.

1978
Abstract : Details are presented of extensive experimental tests of a 90 degree Venus Machine, a fluid mechanical optical control device which deflects a beam of light continuously through large angles. A motion-picture photographic technique was used to obtain extensive data under a variety of operating conditions on the size and shape of the light ...
