A case study of boundary‐layer development downstream of a small, remote island

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 151, Issue 768, April 2025 Part A.
An empirical investigation into fog–island interactions near a remote North Atlantic island during July 2022 is carried out using land‐ and ship‐based observing systems. During the case study, surface winds steadily decreased (a) while strong diurnal forcing caused strong spatial gradients in surface temperatures across the observing region (b ...

Rolling DICE to advance knowledge of land–atmosphere interactions

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The Diurnal land–atmosphere Coupling Experiment (DICE) examines land–atmosphere interactions. Findings show land‐surface models struggle with daytime evaporation without representing dead grass layers; coupling land and atmosphere models improves the accuracy of surface fluxes but compromises variables like temperature and humidity.

Spatial and temporal structure of the fog life cycle over Atlantic Canada and the Grand Banks

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The relationship between fog occurrence and atmospheric and ocean surface conditions is explored from a 71‐year climatological analysis covering a broad range of spatial and temporal scales of marine fog over Atlantic Canada and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada. We find that the ocean surface plays a key role as a necessary boundary condition in
