Polymorphism of Melanocortin Receptor Genes—Association with Inflammatory Traits and Diseases

open access: yesDiseases
Melanocortin receptors (MCRs) are responsible for various functions ranging from skin pigmentation, regulation of appetite, stress response and cognition, steroid synthesis, and energy balance to cellular regeneration and immunomodulation.

Hair regrowth in alopecia areata and re‐pigmentation in vitiligo in response to treatment: Commonalities and differences

open access: yesJournal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 498-511, March 2025.
Hair Regrowth in Alopecia Areata. This scheme summarizes recent findings in hair follicle stem cell biology and their implication to regrow hair in alopecia areata. Hair follicle stem cells reside in hair bulge abundantly. Anagen drivers are enhanced and suppressed expression levels of activators and repressors at telogen, respectively.

Association of Afamelanotide With Improved Outcomes in Patients With Erythropoietic Protoporphyria in Clinical Practice

open access: yesJAMA Dermatology, 2020
The effectiveness of afamelanotide treatment in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) in clinical practice who experience pain after light exposure that substantially impairs quality of life is unknown. To evaluate the association of afamelanotide treatment with outcomes in patients with EPP in regular practice during longer-term follow-up ...

14K prolactin derived 14‐mer antiangiogenic peptide targets bradykinin‐/nitric oxide‐cGMP‐dependent angiogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 2072-2085, December 2024.
The study investigates a novel 14‐mer antiangiogenic peptide (14‐MAP) derived from buffalo prolactin, revealing its potent inhibitory effects on VEGF‐ and bradykinin‐induced angiogenesis. At picomolar concentrations, 14‐MAP disrupts endothelial nitric oxide production, cell migration, and blood vessel development.

The consequences for human health of stratospheric ozone depletion in association with other environmental factors

open access: yes, 2014
Due to the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, which has limited, and is now probably reversing, the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, only modest increases in solar UV-B radiation at the surface of the Earth have occurred.
