Affordances in Situation Theory

James Gibson introduced affordances as a basic notion in his approach to perception. Several formalizations of this concept have been proposed. However, none of the formalizations so far is universally accepted. In this article we propose a new formalization of the concept of affordances within situation theory.

An activity theory approach to affordance

The concept of affordance was introduced to the field of HCI as a means to enhance the understandability and usability of artifacts and especially their user interface. The results have however not been entirely convincing. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the concept of affordance coined by James J. Gibson.
