Mapping Lightning Flash Density and Fatality Risk in Uttar Pradesh Using Satellite‐Based LIS Data and Geospatial Technology

open access: yesCLEAN – Soil, Air, Water, Volume 54, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study integrates satellite‐based LIS lightning data with geospatial analysis to map lightning flash density and assess fatality risk across Uttar Pradesh (2000‒2022). Results reveal marked spatial and seasonal variability, with peak activity during the monsoon and elevated fatalities among rural male populations.

Six‐Component Electromagnetic Wave Measurements of Sprite‐Associated Lightning

open access: yesRadio Science, Volume 61, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Low frequency electromagnetic waves emitted by sprite‐producing lightning are normally measured using vertical electric fields or horizontal magnetic fields. Here we report for the first time the simultaneous measurement of electromagnetic waves from sprite‐producing lightning in all six electromagnetic field components Ex,Ey,Ez,Hx,Hy,andHz ...

The spiny trapdoor spider Blakistonia aurea (Mygalomorphae: Idiopidae) as a model to better understand the natural history of cryptic spiders

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 65, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract The diverse infraorder Mygalomorphae includes fossorial and cryptic spiders, such as tarantulas and trapdoor spiders. Their ability to disperse is often highly limited, rendering some mygalomorphs as rare short‐range endemics. These species are vulnerable to landscape changes, often hard to detect, and have poorly understood reproductive ...

A Unified Theory for the Global Thunderstorm Distribution and Land–Sea Contrast

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract This article evaluates Entraining CAPE (ECAPE) as a thunderstorm proxy in climate studies using Global Precipitation Measurement satellite observations. ECAPE modifies traditional CAPE to account for the dependence of entrainment on the vertical wind shear, the lifted condensation level (LCL) height, and the properties of a cloud's surrounding

Solar variability, weather, and climate [PDF]

open access: yes
Advances in the understanding of possible effects of solar variations on weather and climate are most likely to emerge by addressing the subject in terms of fundamental physical principles of atmospheric sciences and solar-terrestrial physis.

Climatology of Convective Precipitation Systems Over the Arabian Peninsula Using Object‐Tracking

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 1, January 2026.
The study applies an object‐tracking algorithm to IMERG V07 data to analyse convective precipitation systems over the Arabian Peninsula. Using hierarchical agglomerative clustering, we identify three precipitation types over the region. The figure illustrates the spatial distribution of convective system types and their associated daily composite ...

Extreme Rainfall Contribution and Isotopic Excursion of Tropical Storm Alberto in Northeastern Mexico

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 40, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Rationale Tropical cyclones are critical extreme rainfall events that can temporarily mitigate drought impacts in semiarid regions. Despite the well‐known North Atlantic hurricane season, the propagation of isotopically distinct rainfall pulses across semiarid landscapes of Mesoamerica is largely unknown.

WetNet: Using SSM/I data interactively for global distribution of tropical rainfall and precipitable water [PDF]

open access: yes
The research objectives were the following: (1) to use SSM/I to categorize, measure, and parameterize effects of rainfall systems around the globe, especially mesoscale convective systems; (2) to use SSM/I to monitor key components of the global ...
