Natural Forest Clearings Enable the Persistence of Stable Spotted Hyena Populations in Congo Basin Rainforests

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 5, September 2025.
Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are known to range across broad savanna regions of sub‐Saharan Africa, but there is very limited understanding of how and to what extent they use lowland rainforest habitats. We use camera trap data and GPS telemetry to show that bais, natural rainforest clearings, can support hyenas living exclusively in the rainforest—

Aging with HIV/AIDS in Sub‐Saharan Africa: A scoping review

open access: yesCanadian Geographer / Le géographe canadien, Volume 69, Issue 3, Autumn / automne 2025.
Abstract Older adults in Sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) are projected to increase 4‐fold from 46 million to 165 million by 2050. Despite this fact, global health policies and programs typically neglect this particular demographic. This is illustrated by the fact that policies and programs directed towards human immunodeficiency virus/acquired ...

Tuta absoluta's population genetic structure across Africa: Two well‐delineated but weakly differentiated groups suggesting few introductions and significant gene flow Structure génétique des populations de Tuta absoluta à travers l'Afrique: deux groupes bien délimités mais faiblement différenciés suggérent peu d'introductions et un flux génétique important

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 223-240, May 2025.
Abstract Describing the genetic structure and diversity of invasive insect pest populations is essential to better understand a species' invasion history and success throughout its distribution range. Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) is a destructive pest of tomato and many other solanaceous crops, with very high economic impacts. Its

Assessment of Vegetation Habitat Types and Characteristics of Potential Nesting Trees for White‐Backed Vultures (Gyps africanus) in Kempiana and Manyeleti Nature Reserves, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 3, March 2025.
The study revealed that Scavenger Vultures (Gyps africanus) prefer to nest in mixed forests with grass rather than in grasslands, bare ground, or built‐up environments. They also choose tall, wide trees. These results confirm that these vultures do not choose their nesting trees at random, but according to specific criteria.

Deforestation changes the effectiveness of bed nets for malaria control

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 180-193, January 2025.
Abstract Land use changes such as deforestation and the degradation of tropical forests can be key drivers of infectious disease, including malaria. However, programmes that evaluate the effectiveness of malaria‐control strategies such as bed nets rarely account for the impacts of surrounding land use change.

Updated distribution of spotted hyaenas in Gabon reveals resident populations

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 2, February 2024.
Abstract Spotted hyaena distribution currently widely encompasses sub‐Saharan Africa, apart from the Congo Basin. Formerly described as residents of Gabon but considered extinct, vagrant individuals have been recorded since 2003, but no systematic species presence assessment has been made.
