Ring Formation in Sesquiterpene Synthesis: Biomimetic vs. Non‐Biomimetic Strategies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, Volume 29, Issue 5, 7 February 2026.
A short review of cyclase enzyme‐mediated ring formation in sesquiterpene biosynthesis is presented as a prelude to six case studies examining the merits and demerits of biomimetic vs. non‐biomimetic strategies for carbocyclisation in the total synthesis of this iconic natural product class.

The Scent of Stress: Evidence From the Unique Fragrance of Agarwood

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Agarwood (Aquilaria spp.) fragrance and its origin in stress make it probably the most suitable model to study stress-induced aroma. Production being confined only to certain small pockets of South and Southeast Asia, agarwood is arguably the costliest ...

Saprophytic Bacillus Accelerates the Release of Effective Components in Agarwood by Degrading Cellulose

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
The value of Agarwood increases with time due to the gradual release of its major components, but the mechanism behind this remains unclear. Herein we reveal that the potential driving force of this process is the degradation of cellulose in Agarwood by ...

Krisanaklan Reduces Intestinal Anion and Fluid Secretion Through Inhibition of Na+/K+‐ATPase and K+ Channel Activity

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1556, Issue 1, February 2026.
Krisanaklan reduces CFTR‐dependent intestinal chloride and fluid secretion by inhibiting the Na+,K+‐ATPase and K+ channels in epithelial cells. Consequently, this natural, plant‐derived product may limit secretory diarrhea caused by a diverse array of microbial pathogens. However, by dissipating the transmembrane Na+ gradient, Krisanaklan also inhibits

The Genome of Phoebe zhennan (Lauraceae) and Comparative Genomics of Phoebe 楠木(樟科)基因组与楠属植物比较基因组学研究

open access: yesIntegrative Conservation, Volume 4, Issue 4, Page 584-599, December 2025.
Phoebe zhennan is a Chinese endemic and valuable timber species of Phoebe (Lauraceae). We present a chromosome‐level genome assembly of P. zhennan. Our research provides novel insights into the genome evolution of Phoebe, including whole‐genome duplication, phylogenetic relationships of magnoliids, and key MYB regulatory genes involved in lignin ...

Agarwood Induction: Current Developments and Future Perspectives

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Agarwood is a resinous part of the non-timber Aquilaria tree, which is a highly valuable product for medicine and fragrance purposes. To protect the endangered Aquilaria species, mass plantation of Aquilaria trees has become a sustainable way in Asian ...

Aquilaria sinensis MYB‐Like Transcription Factor AsMYB1 Promotes 2‐(2‐Phenylethyl)Chromone Biosynthesis Through Interacting With 14‐3‐3 Family Protein AsGRF1

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 12, Page 5800-5816, December 2025.
ABSTRACT 2‐(2‐Phenylethyl)chromones (PECs) are the primary constituents of agarwood, a valuable aromatic resin widely used in traditional oriental medicine and incense production, exhibiting diverse pharmacological activities. While we have previously reported a polyketide synthase (AsPECPS) playing a crucial role in the biosynthesis of PECs in ...

CYP82G1 Enzyme Functions as Chromone Hydroxylase in the Biosynthesis of 6‐Hydroxy‐2‐(2‐Phenylethyl)chromone in Aquilaria sinensis

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 12, Page 5570-5584, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aquilaria sinensis, a plant of the genus Aquilaria in the family Thymelaeaceae, can form resinous and fragrant agarwood in response to wounding or infection. The resin physically occludes xylem vessels and ray parenchyma, limiting pathogen mobility and resource loss.

Cossid moths (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) as pests of woody plants – A review

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 27, Issue 4, Page 512-531, November 2025.
Abstract The Cossidae is a worldwide family of macro‐moths popularly known as carpenter moths due to the larval habit of boring in the wood of living plants. This review compiles current knowledge on the characteristics, diversity and bionomy of cossid moths as well as the damage they cause on woody plants.
