In the course of preparing a taxonomic treatment of Agave (Agavaceae), recognition of four taxonomic novelties is needed. Agave phillipsiana is a new, rare species known only from four sites in Grand Canyon National Park and is distinguished by its open rosette, large glaucous leaves, narrowed paniculate inflorescence, and large flowers.
