Shear strength parameters for porous asphalt mixtures: From macro to meso

open access: yesMaterials & Design
The shear strength of asphalt mixtures significantly influences the rut resistance of flexible pavements. Existing methods predominantly address macroscopic aspects, failing to unveil the underlying mechanisms.

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Dynamic Testing of Cold Gas Sprayed Bipolar Plates–Porous Transport Layer Coating System in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Through direct application of porous transport layer (PTL) on the bipolar plate (BPP) with thermal spraying, the interfacial contact resistance is improved. With the cold gas sprayed BPP–PTL coating system, a proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cell with a cell voltage of Ucell = 1.9 V can be operated up to i = 2.5 A/cm2 in a dynamic mode ...

Evaluation of Dowel Bar Retrofits for Local Road Pavements, TR-520, 2008 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
As truck traffic on Iowa secondary roads has increased, engineers have moved to concrete pavements of greater depths. Early designs included thickened edge pavements and depths of seven inches or greater.

Corrosion and Process Analysis of a Preoxidized MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode in Laboratory‐Scale Na‐Cryolite Molten Salt Electrolysis of Aluminum at 1000°C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
EDX elemental map of the pre‐oxidized MgO–steel cermet anode cross section after electrolysis. The development of inert anodes for aluminum electrolysis remains challenging due to the high corrosivity of cryolite‐based melts at 950°C–1000°C. This study investigates the corrosion and process behavior of a carbon‐free MgO–steel cermet anode derived from ...

Resistance Rapid Heating of Aluminum Coatings in an Extreme High Vacuum–Adequate Atmosphere for Hot Stamping

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The subject of this work is the development of a corrosion‐protective coating on steel sheets for form hardening. Rapid heating in an extreme high vacuum (XHV)‐adequate atmosphere is a useful method to prevent oxidation during alloying of 22MnB5 and aluminum to obtain a metallurgical bonding.

Influence of blending proportion on mechanical and microstructural properties of cement-stabilized full-depth reclamation base

open access: yesResults in Engineering
This study investigates the influence of various blending proportions (coarse: fine), varying cement dosages, and curing durations on the mechanical behavior of cement stabilized full depth reclaimed (FDR) pavement materials to be used as a base layer ...

Weakly Supervised Audio Source Separation via Spectrum Energy Preserved Wasserstein Learning

open access: yes, 2018
Separating audio mixtures into individual instrument tracks has been a long standing challenging task. We introduce a novel weakly supervised audio source separation approach based on deep adversarial learning.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Deoxidation of Natively Oxide Layer of Copper Powders in a Fluidized Bed

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a novel approach to reducing oxide layers on metal powders using low‐temperature hydrogen dielectric barrier discharge plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Unlike conventional hydrogen‐plasma reductions, the powders do not contact the plasma directly.
