The Immediate Aesthetic and Functional Restoration of Maxillary Incisors Compromised by Periodontitis Using Short Implants with Single Crown Restorations: A Minimally Invasive Approach and Five-Year Follow-Up

open access: yesCase Reports in Dentistry, 2015
The functional and aesthetic restoration of teeth compromised due to aggressive periodontitis presents numerous challenges for the clinician. Horizontal bone loss and soft tissue destruction resulting from periodontitis can impede implant placement and ...

The Effect of Non‐Surgical Periodontal Therapy on Subgingival Microbiota: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This paper provides crucial insights and evidence on the effect of non‐surgical periodontal therapy on subgingival microbiota. NSPT leads to significant reductions in disease‐associated microbial species. Supportive periodontal care provision provided further decrease in mean counts of disease‐associated species.

Decreased phagocytic function in neutrophils and monocytes from peripheral blood in periodontal disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Phagocytosis by neutrophils and monocytes constitutes the main defense mechanism against bacterial challenges in periodontitis. Phagocytosis by neutrophils has already been evaluated, whereas phagocytic function of monocytes has hardly been addressed ...

Association between monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 -2518 A/G gene polymorphism and the outcome of the nonsurgical periodontal treatment

open access: yesJournal of the Formosan Medical Association, 2018
Elevated monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is related to severe periodontal destruction. Furthermore, MCP-1 -2518 A/G gene polymorphism affects MCP-1 after inflammatory stimuli.

Systemic, Lifestyle and Environmental Modifying Factors in the Pathogenesis of Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
A variety of impacting factors in the pathogenesis of periodontitis exist, including systemic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. This review highlights the manifold mechanistic aspects of the link between the pathogenesis of periodontitis, addressing these numerous factors to supplement the long‐standing knowledge of the progression of the disease.

The Role of Oxidative Stress in Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Oxidative stress is involved in multiple chemical reactions that take place in different intracellular organelles: mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, autophagy, and aging, and can be influenced by exogenous factors: nutrition, physical activity, psychological status, environmental conditions, microbiome, and drugs.
