Multiscale Regulation of Ru‐Based Catalysts for Upgrading Biomass‐Derived Levulinic Acid and Levulinates to γ‐Valerolactone: Mechanisms, Advances, and Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent advances in the mechanistic, thermodynamic, and kinetic studies of biomass‐derived levulinic acid/levulinates conversion to γ‐valerolactone, along with the corresponding multiscale regulation strategies of Ru‐based catalysts.

Hypothalamic POMC Neurons Gate the Fear‐Feeding Trade‐Off

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hungry animals must continually arbitrate between feeding and defensive behaviors when confronted with potential threats. We show that hypothalamic POMC neurons engage CRH‐expressing stress circuits and downstream hormonal responses to coordinate this behavioral selection between competing behaviors.

Flooding‐Driven Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Global Upland Croplands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Temporary flooding of upland croplands releases nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and methane. Field measurements combined with a global literature synthesis yield a global estimate of 63.3 teragrams of carbon dioxide equivalent per year for diffusive emissions from flooded upland croplands.

Dramatic Enhancement and Integration of Properties in Pork Belly‐Inspired All‐Biomass Composite Films via Facile, Sustainable, and Controllable Design

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A pork belly‐inspired all‐biomass composite film was constructed through layer‐by‐layer assembly of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), gelatin, and graphitized carbon nanosheets (GCNs) via hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. The excellent mechanical properties, effective thermal management, and outstanding EMI shielding performance of the ...

Enriched Soil Organic Carbon Underpins Long‐Term Stable Crop Productivity Across China's Croplands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Quantifying the nonlinear relationships and causal effects of soil organic carbon (SOC) on crop stability reveals specific critical thresholds and saturation points. This partitions the national SOC spectrum into three functional phases. Integrating these spatial delineations with high‐resolution maps of marginal gains pinpoints regions with the ...

Sustainability, Agriculture, and Agricultural Policy [PDF]

open access: possibleEnvironment and Planning A: Economy and Space, 1995
In this paper, the problem of achieving sustainable development in the context of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and other policy suggestions is examined. Sustainable development is defined as a commitment to conserve necessary biological, cultural, and aesthetic capital for future generations. This is not a costless process.
