Relating Agulhas leakage to the Agulhas Current retroflection location [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2009
Abstract. The relation between the Agulhas Current retroflection location and the magnitude of Agulhas leakage, the transport of water from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean, is investigated in a high-resolution numerical ocean model. Sudden eastward retreats of the Agulhas Current retroflection loop are linearly related to the shedding of Agulhas rings,

A weaker Agulhas Current leads to more Agulhas leakage [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2009
Time series of transports in the Agulhas region have been constructed by simulating Lagrangian drifter trajectories in a 1/10 degree two‐way nested ocean model. Using these 34 year long time series it is shown that smaller (larger) Agulhas Current transport leads to larger (smaller) Indian‐Atlantic inter‐ocean exchange.

Decoupling of the Agulhas Leakage from the Agulhas Current [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2014
Abstract The relationship between the Agulhas Current and the Agulhas leakage is not well understood. Here, this is investigated using two basin-scale and two global ocean models of incrementally increasing resolution. The response of the Agulhas Current is evaluated under a series of sensitivity experiments, in which idealized anomalies,

Generation of cyclonic eddies by the Agulhas Current in the Lee of the Agulhas Bank [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2001
Anti‐cyclonic rings are shed from the Agulhas Current at its retroflection. They subsequently drift off into the South Atlantic. Smaller, cyclonic eddies have also been observed in this region. The origin of these latter eddies has remained unknown. We present model results that indicate that the configuration of the southern Agulhas Current and the ...

Atmospheric Signature of the Agulhas Current [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
AbstractWestern boundary currents play an important role in the climate system by transporting heat poleward and releasing it to the atmosphere. While their influence on extratropical storms and oceanic rainfall is becoming appreciated, their coastal influence is less known.
