Preconditioning of Polynya Formation by Ocean Mixing at Maud Rise, Antarctica

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Antarctic open‐ocean polynyas trigger vigorous wintertime convection, influencing ocean circulation and atmospheric processes. In the Weddell Sea, interaction between the Weddell Gyre and the Maud Rise seamount generates a Taylor column that favors polynya formation.

The role of the Agulhas System The role of the Agulhas System

open access: yesTrans Amer Geophys Union, 2013
The AGU Chapman Conference on the Agulhas system was the first held on the African continent. There was a feeling of excitement among participants about the great diversity of ongoing research related to the Agulhas Current system, including its role in global and regional climate, its possible influence on human origins in southern Africa, its link to

Why Are There Agulhas Rings? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 1999
Abstract The recently proposed analytical theory of Nof and Pichevin describing the intimate relationship between retroflecting currents and the production of rings is examined numerically and applied to the Agulhas Current. Using a reduced-gravity 1½-layer primitive equation model of the Bleck and Boudra type the authors show that, as the theory ...

Glacial‐Interglacial Shifts in Export Productivity and Iron Flux in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean

open access: yesPaleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Volume 41, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Greater ocean export productivity fueled by enhanced delivery of iron to the Sub‐Antarctic Zone (SAZ) of the Southern Ocean is hypothesized to play an important role in reducing atmospheric CO2 during Pleistocene glaciations. However, spatial variability in iron input and nutrient availability complicates quantifying the integrated impact of ...

Intensified Oxygen Minimum Zone in Response to Both Insolation Maxima and Carbon Dioxide‐Driven Warmth in the Tropical North Atlantic

open access: yesPaleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Volume 41, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Oxygen (O2) is essential for almost all life on Earth, but O2 concentrations are rapidly declining in the oceans under global warming, stressing marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. Numerical model simulations suggest greatly expanded North Atlantic Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs) under warm Pliocene conditions, but sparse data limit ...

Advancing the pneumatic method to assess xylem vulnerability to embolism among distinct growth forms

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 28, Issue 5, Page 1385-1398, August 2026.
Our study shows that pneumatic vulnerability curves can be constructed across contrasting growth forms, with P50 showing the closest agreement across methods. Repeated relative water content measurements improved water potential estimation for graminoid culms. Abstract Drought‐driven plant mortality is closely linked to xylem embolism. Building useful,
