Seasonal and spatial SST variability in the Agulhas retroflection and Agulhas return current

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 1998
Multichannel sea surface temperature data from the NOAA advanced very high-resolution radiometer for the three-year period October 1991-September 1994 were analysed to characterise spatial and temporal sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the Agulhas retroflection and Agulhas return current regions south and east of Africa. Empirical orthogonal

Procurando agulha no palheiro

Observations of an Agulhas Undercurrent

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 1997
An Agulhas Undercurrent has been directly measured on two occasions using a new acoustic current profiling technique (Lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, LADCP). The core of the Undercurrent is centred around a depth of 1200 m, against the continental slope and directly below the surface core of the south-westward flowing Agulhas Current ...

The Retroflection of the Agulhas Current

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1988
Abstract A description of the nature and kinematics of the Agulhas Current termination is given based on satellite infrared imagery and selected hydrographic measurements collected over the past decade. On average the Agulhas retroflection lies between 16° and 20°E longitude and has a loop diameter of 340 km.

The Agulhas Return Current

Journal of Marine Systems, 2001
Abstract The Agulhas Return Current constitutes the intense flow along the Subtropical Convergence south of Africa. It forms the connecting link between the generically similar South Atlantic Current and the South Indian Ocean Current, thus contributing to the water exchange between these two basins.

The Agulhas Bank Circulation

2020
<p>The southern tip of Africa is the gateway between the Indian and Atlantic oceans, one of the most widely recognized chokepoints of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC). The oceanic circulation in this region connects a western boundary current, the Agulhas Current, to an eastern boundary current, the Benguela Current ...

On the Agulhas Bank Circulation

2019
This presentation focuses on the oceanic circulation over the Agulhas Bank, which is the continental shelf region located at the southern tip of the African continent. Model and observations are used to characterize the time mean circulation its seasonal evolution and its interannual variability.

Agulhas Bank Plankton

1973
Information on the plankton of the Agulhas Bank has always been scarce and sporadic. We had to rely on occasional collections made at a small number of stations by passing expedition ships. A regular exploration of the Bank from a planktological point of view has never been attempted.

On the Course of the Agulhas Current

South African Geographical Journal, 1983
Abstract Temperature sections across the Agulhas Current between 28°30’s and 34°S are analysed to determine the course of the Current down the East Coast of southern Africa. The results show that, on average, the Agulhas follows the continental slope with a side-ways meandering displacement of 10-15 km on either side.
