It forms the connecting link between the generically similar South Atlantic Current and the South Indian Ocean Current, thus contributing to the water exchange between these two basins.

Abstract The role played by large. solitary meanders on the flow of the Agulhas Current is reviewed briefly and a tentative classification of meander types is proposed. These meanders occur off the east coast of southern Africa and have a significant effect on the shortterm heat and mass transport of the current.

Information on the plankton of the Agulhas Bank has always been scarce and sporadic. We had to rely on occasional collections made at a small number of stations by passing expedition ships. A regular exploration of the Bank from a planktological point of view has never been attempted.
