Air Drilling Techniques

SPE Deep Drilling and Production Symposium, 1977
Introduction The use of air or gas as a circulating medium was introduced in the early 1950's. Even though initial attempts were crude, significant increases in penetration rate and bit life were obtained. Since these initial attempts, development of air and gas drilling techniques have expanded and are widely ...

Air Drilling To Date

Annual Technical Meeting, 1968
Abstract The use of air to provide an aid by which holes could be drilled has been an interesting and sometimes complex series of events. The bulk of what has happenedpertaining to oil well drilling has been accomplished from approximately 1950 to date. Characteristically, this work has been a series of "Ups and downs".

“Air Drill” for Submerged Massive Coral Drilling

Marine Technology Society Journal, 2003
The handy and inexpensive drilling method using SCUBA tanks was developed specifically for submerged massive coral drilling, which is an effective technique for its annual bands research. All required equipment for 10 m drilling can be packed up into two suitcases, except for the SCUBA tank.

Air and Gas Drilling

Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1956
Abstract The San Juan Basin of Northwestern New Mexico gave the impetus to the drilling industry to extend the use of gas drilling. This in turn brought about extended use of compressed air as a drilling medium, especially in wildcatting. Many new drilling problems have developed with the advent of

Analysis of Air Drilling Hydraulics

Proceedings of SPE Eastern Regional Meeting, 1990
Abstract Analysis of wellbore hydraulics is motivated by the need for improved understanding of this system so as to enhance air drilling operation. A viable wellbore hydraulics model is utilized as the basis for this study. Several important parameters that influence air drilling operations are analyzed, such as drill cutting size and ...

Review of Air and Gas Drilling

Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1956
Abstract Experimental work with compressed air or gas as drilling fluid has been carried on by Humble in West Texas, South Texas, North Texas, and New Mexico with beneficial results in nearly all instances. During the past three years, gas has been used at certain stages in drilling seven wells and air in nine wells.

Application of An Air-Drilling Package in Oman

Middle East Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1981
Abstract In order to reduce water requirements for drilling on their desert concession area, Petroleum Development Oman (P.D.O.) made a 12-month trial of air-drilling techniques. By using foam as a circulating medium, top-hole sections can now be drilled with only 30 bbl/hour water-supply, where previously 500 bbl/hour were needed to ...

Volume Requirements in Air Drilling

Proceedings of Drilling and Rock Mechanics Conference, 1967
Abstract This work was carried out to obtain a more realistic method for prediction of bottom-hole pressures and air or gas volumes required in air and gas drilling. The approach presented allows a prediction of the volume of air or gas required to lift particles from the point in the annulus of critical lift: the ...
