Hybrid Air Foil Thrust Bearings Design and Performance Measurement
Volume 8A: Structures and Dynamics — Aerodynamics Excitation and Damping; Bearing and Seal Dynamics; Emerging Methods in Engineering Design, Analysis, and Additive Manufacturing; Fatigue, Fracture, and Life Prediction, 2022Abstract Air foil bearings (AFBs) are widely used in high speed and low duty turbomachinery such as fuel cell air compressors, turbo blowers and micro gas turbines due to its high-speed operation, low power loss and good temperature adaptability.

Performance of novel air foil thrust bearings with taper-groove on surface of top foil
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2020To improve the load capacity of air foil thrust bearing, the micro taper-grooves on the surface of top foil was introduced and studied. A modified Reynolds equation considering the gas rarefaction effect was established, in which the Knudsen number was affected by the film thickness and pressure.

Thermal Optimization of Air Foil Thrust Bearings Using Different Foil Materials
Volume 7B: Structures and Dynamics, 2019Abstract Air foil bearings are used in turbomachinery applications with high speeds and in oil-free environments. Their numerical analysis has to account for the multiphysicality of the problem. This work features a detailed thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model of an air foil thrust bearing with bump-type foil-structure. The bearing geometry

Design and Performance Prediction of Hybrid Air Foil Thrust Bearings
Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2010Air foil bearings (AFBs) have been recognized as the most promising for oil-free turbomachinery. However, the applications of AFBs to the relatively large turbomachinery have many technical challenges due to limited load capacity and wear during start/stops.

Influence of wedge shape on the performance of air foil thrust bearings
Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 2019Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of different wedge shapes on the performance of air foil thrust bearing (AFTB). Design/methodology/approach During the study, a bump foil stiffness model considering slip deformation and a two-dimensional sheet top foil model is established, and the Reynolds equation and film thickness ...

Theoretical Study of Top Foil Sagging Effect on the Performance of Air Thrust Foil Bearing
Volume 7B: Structures and Dynamics, 2016Air thrust foil bearings are used in small turbomachinery to support axial load. Typically, thrust bearings are designed with certain amount of taper from the leading edge until flat land area with uniform clearance. Therefore, the bearing performance is affected by many factors such as taper ratio, taper height, configuration of structural support ...

2-FSI Analysis of an Air Foil Thrust Bearing of Air Compressor for a Hydrogen Electric Car
Transactions of the Korean Society for Noise and Vibration Engineering, 2019A hydrogen-electric car is a fuel-cell vehicle that reacts hydrogen fuel with oxygen in the air to generate electricity to drive the traction motor. An air compressor is a device that compresses air and supplies it to the fuel cell stack. These generally use two types of airfoil bearings: The first is journal bearing, the second a thrust bearing.
