THE AIR-KERMA RATE CONSTANT: APPLICATION TO AIR-KERMA MEASUREMENTS FOR HOMELAND SECURITY
Health Physics, 2008Air-kerma rate measurements from 57Co, 60Co, and 137Cs radioactive sources were performed. These measurements were motivated by the development of new sources at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for radiological testing of equipment for homeland security applications.

This paper reviews the current status of air-kerma cavity standards for gamma rays from 60Co, 137Cs and 192Ir sources. It describes the basic principles and the theories to determine the air-kerma rate from the ionization current of graphite-walled cavity ionization chambers. A typical design of a cavity chamber is shown and described.

Air kerma rate constants for radionuclides
European Journal of Nuclear Medicine, 1988Conversion to SI units requires that the exposure rate constant which was usually quoted in R.h-1.mCi-1.cm2 be replaced by the air kerma rate constant with units m2.Gy.Bq-1.s-1. The conversion factor is derived and air kerma rate constants for 30 radionuclides used in nuclear medicine and brachytherapy are listed.

103Pd loaded cartridge air kerma strength verification
Medical Dosimetry, 1999Using radioactive 125I or 103Pd seeds in large number to treat prostate cancer has become popular. This procedure's popularity translates to increased physicist and dosimetrist workloads with regard to performing source strength assays. In addition, radiation exposure to the physicists' and dosimetrists' hands as a result of source handling has ...

The Air-kerma Rate Constant of 192Ir
Health Physics, 1993The air-kerma rate constant gamma delta (and its precursors), as one of the basic radiation characteristics of 192Ir, was determined by many authors. Analysis of accessible data on this quantity led us to the conclusion that published data strongly disagree.

A new Diamentor for measuring kerma‐area product and air‐kerma simultaneously
Medical Physics, 1997The new M4KDK Diamentor (PTW‐Freiburg) for measuring the air‐kerma‐area product (KAP) and air kerma (AK) simultaneously was evaluated. The special design of the Diamentor chamber influences the variation of the calibration factor with respect to the field size somewhat differently to what is the case with the classic Diamentor.

Seasonal variation of air kerma rate in Sicily
Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2008Thermoluminescence dosimetry has been used to measure air kerma in 29 sites in Sicily. Four three month measurement campaigns have been carried out in order to assess seasonal variations. Average annual values between 20 and 90 nGy h(-1), after cosmic background subtraction, are reported.

Air kerma rate from radionuclides distributed in forest ecosystem
Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2023This study evaluates the air kerma rate in radioactively contaminated forests. The air kerma rates created by plane sources of monoenergetic photons in the energy range 0.02-3 MeV located at different depths in soil up to 50 g cm-2 and at different heights in the forest medium from 0.05 to 50 m were calculated using numeric solution of the transport ...

Determining air kerma from pixel values in digital mammography
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2009The pixels in digital detectors used in x-ray imaging can be considered as small dose meters. In mammography, the image detector area is commonly only partly covered by tissue and the incident air kerma could be monitored by using pixel values from the detector elements in the unattenuated primary beam area.
