Pilots’ visual scan pattern and situation awareness in flight operations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Introduction: Situation awareness (SA) is considered an essential prerequisite for safe flying. If the impact of visual scanning patterns on a pilot’s situation awareness could be identified in flight operations, then eye-tracking tools could be ...

Air bubbles and co-oximetry a pilot study [PDF]

open access: yesCritical Care, 1997
The pre-analytical error potential of air bubbles contaminating blood gas samples has been well recognized for blood gas tension and pH measurements [1], and is thus considered in present recommendations for blood gas sample handling [2]. The effect of air contamination on the oxygen saturation of haemoglobin (HbO), measured by co-oximetry, has however,

From In‐Silico Optimized Microfabrication to Experimental Validation: Engineering a Tridimensional Epi‐Intraneural Interface

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An epi‐intraneural interface is developed through in silico optimization and a novel tridimensional microfabrication pipeline. The device integrates penetrating and epineural contacts on a flexible substrate. Mechanical, electrochemical, and in vivo testing in rat and pig reveal robust implantation, low‐threshold activation, and site‐dependent ...

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.

Air transport pilot involvement in general aviation accidents [PDF]

open access: yesErgonomics, 1986
Abstract General aviation (GA) fatal accident records of airport transport pilots (ATPs) were compared to those of private pilots (PVTs). ATPs are safer GA pilots than the PVTs. They have comparable exposure in GA airplanes and account for 7·5% of all certified to fly, but only 3·5% of the fatal accidents.

Drug‐Free Thrombolysis Mediated by Physically Activated Micro/Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of particle‐mediated thrombolytic effects (thermal, mechanical, and chemical) and their activating physical stimuli (light, ultrasound, and magnetic field) in drug‐free thrombolysis. ABSTRACT Thrombus‐associated disorders rank among the world's leading causes of death, with ischemic heart disease and stroke as the main contributors.

Relationships among barodontalgia prevalence, altitude, stress, dental care frequency, and barodontalgia awareness: a survey of Turkish pilots [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Background Gas expansion in body cavities due to pressure changes at high altitudes can cause barodontalgia. This condition may compromise flight safety.
