Air pollution and health

open access: yesThe Lancet, 2002
The health effects of air pollution have been subject to intense study in recent years. Exposure to pollutants such as airborne particulate matter and ozone has been associated with increases in mortality and hospital admissions due to respiratory and cardiovascular disease.

Fine‐Tunning BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.1Y0.1O3−δ‐Based Air Electrodes for Reversible Protonic Ceramic Cells via Co‐Engineering A‐site Deficiency and Nickel Content

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A synergistic strategy combining A‐site deficiency and B‐site nickel doping yielded a BCFZYN‐095‐01 nanocomposite air electrode for reversible protonic ceramic cells with superior ORR/OER activities. B‐site deficiency in the perovskite lattice enhances proton conduction, and nickel doping within the bulk facilitates oxygen transport.

Regional-Scale Ozone Deposition to North-East Atlantic Waters

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2010
A regional climate model is used to evaluate dry deposition of ozone over the North East Atlantic. Results are presented for a deposition scheme accounting for turbulent and chemical enhancement of oceanic ozone deposition and a second non-chemical ...

A Bioengineered Model of the Human Cornea for Preclinical Assessment of Human Ocular Exposure to Environmental Toxicants

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 7, March 14, 2025.
This paper presents a microphysiological system containing an array of individually addressable living corneal tissues constructed using primary human cells. The bioengineered eye model can simulate acute exposure of the human cornea to different types of environmental toxicants and provides a novel platform for visualization and quantitative ...

Hollow‐Structured Nanorobot with Excellent Magnetic Propulsion for Catalytic Pollutant Degradation, Anti‐Bacterial and Biofilm Removal

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A hollow‐structured Fe3O4@AgAu@PDA‐ZnPc nanosphere has been developed, exhibiting controllable catalytic activity and “photothermal‐photodynamic‐Ag+” coupling antibacterial characteristics. When subjected to a rotating magnetic field, these performances are uniquely enhanced by magnetic propulsion, allowing the nanosphere to function as a magnetic ...

Maquiladoras, Air Pollution, and Human Health in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso [PDF]

open access: yes
Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, is home to the U.S.–Mexico border’s largest maquiladora labor force, and also its worst air pollution. We marshal two types of evidence to examine the link between maquiladoras and air pollution in Ciudad Juárez, and in its ...

Gasotransmitters in Modern Medicine: Promises and Challenges in the Use of Porous Crystalline Carriers

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective provides an overview of the growing interest in utilizing various gasotransmitters—small gaseous signaling molecules namely nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S)—for several therapeutic applications, with emphasis on the potential use of porous materials as carriers to provide safe and controlled local ...
