Loss of air sacs improved hominin speech abilities
Journal of Human Evolution, 2012In this paper, the acoustic-perceptual effects of air sacs are investigated. Using an adaptive hearing experiment, it is shown that air sacs reduce the perceptual effect of vowel-like articulations. Air sacs are a feature of the vocal tract of all great apes, except humans.

Air sac cannula placement in birds
Lab Animal, 2006Air sac cannulas are indicated in birds with upper respiratory obstruction or for ventilation during surgical procedures involving the head and neck. Proper technique, knowledge of potential complications, and an understanding of the indications for air sac tube placement are important for scientists, veterinarians, and technicians who work with birds.

Sisters of the Sinuses: Cetacean Air Sacs
The Anatomical Record, 2008AbstractThis overview assesses some distinguishing features of the cetacean (whale, dolphin, porpoise) air sac system that may relate to the anatomy and function of the paranasal sinuses in terrestrial mammals. The cetacean respiratory tract has been modified through evolution to accommodate living in water.

THE PERCEPTUAL EFFECT OF AIR SACS
The Evolution of Language, 2010This paper presents work on air sacs that extends the work presented by de Boer, (2008a). In that paper, and before (Fitch, 2000) air sacs were identified as a likely feature of our evolutionary ancestors that may have been lost because of the evolution of speech.
