Reduction of Oxide Inclusions During the High‐Frequency Welding of Steel via a Nonthermal Ar/H2 Plasma Jet

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐frequency (HF) welding of steel is limited by oxide inclusions that degrade weld quality. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the integration of a nonthermal Ar/H2 dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet into HF welding. Local plasma treatment provides effective shielding and in‐situ oxide reduction, resulting in markedly fewer and ...

Estimating the Distribution of Air Voids in Concrete

open access: yesCivil Engineering Dimension, 2011
Chord length measurements are used to estimate the volumetric distribution of air voids within hardened concrete samples. The accuracy of the Linear-Traverse method is questionable because chord lengths do not directly represent the actual volumes of the

Fluidic packaging of microengine and microrocket devices for high pressure and high temperature operation

open access: yes, 2004
The fluidic packaging of Power MEMS devices such as the MIT microengine and microrocket requires the fabrication of hermetic seals capable of withstanding temperature in the range 20-600/spl deg/C and pressures in the range 100-300 atm.

Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...

Porometry, porosimetry, image analysis and void network modelling in the study of the pore-level properties of filters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We present fundamental and quantitative comparisons between the techniques of porometry (or flow permporometry), porosimetry, image analysis and void network modelling for seven types of filter, chosen to encompass the range of simple to complex void ...

Handbook of Establishing and Maintaining Oxygen‐Free Atmospheres

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a practical framework for creating oxygen‐free atmospheres at ambient pressure using silane‐doped inert gases. The results show that ultra‐low oxygen levels and strongly reduced water content can be achieved through controlled silane dosing, drying systems, and sensor monitoring.

Performance of Laboratory Designed Permeable Asphalt Mixtures

open access: yesThe Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering
Permeable asphalt pavement is one of the sustainable solutions to remove water from road surfaces. The aim of the research is to analyse the performance of permeable asphalt mixtures depending on the different nominal maximum size and, as a result, to ...

Additive Gaussian Process Regression for Predictive Design of High‐Performance, Printable Silicones

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A chemistry‐aware design framework for tuning printable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for vat photopolymerization (VPP) is developed using additive Gaussian process (GP) modeling. Polymer network mechanics informs variable groupings, feasible formulation constraints, and interaction variables.

Effect of Oxygen Content on Surface and Subsurface Integrity During Turning of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how oxygen content in the ambient atmosphere affects the surface and subsurface properties of Ti–6Al–4V during turning. Results show that oxygen does not influence surface roughness. However, machining in an extremely high vacuum‐adequate atmosphere increases surface hardness by up to 7.8% and induces compressive residual stresses ...

Photonic crystal thin films of GaAs prepared by atomic layer deposition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Photonic crystal thin films were fabricated via the self-assembly of a lattice of silica spheres on silicon (100) substrates. Progressive infilling of the air spaces within the structure with GaAs was achieved using trimethylgallium and arsine under ...
