Application of Polymer Nanocomposites in the Design of Prosthetic Sockets That Feature Auxetic Meta‐Structures

open access: yesJournal of Applied Polymer Science, EarlyView.
Lightweight prosthetic sockets constructed using auxetic meta‐structures can help reduce physical discomfort when compared to a similar lightweight socket featuring a nonauxetic meta‐structure. The chiral auxetic meta‐structured sockets demonstrated better contact pressure profiles at the interface between the socket and the residual limb.

Aircraft-to-aircraft separation based on reinforcement learning

open access: yes, 2022
Air traffic has been increasing and with it the workload of air traffic controllers. Despite the pandemic, the latest figures show a rapid recovery and forecast exponential growth. This indicates the need to modernise air traffic control and the technology used, which is already being developed and implemented by organisations like SESAR, like applying

Electrical Conductivity in Fibrous Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research, EarlyView.
The authors derive a geometry‐based electrical model that accurately predicts how conductive fibers overlap, connect, and form percolating networks in composite materials. By uniting network physics with foam‐like cluster modeling, their equations reliably forecast percolation thresholds and conductivity across diverse fiber types and matrices ...

Functional models from limited data: A parametric and multimodal approach to anatomy and 3D kinematics of feeding in basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Basking sharks, Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus, Brugden [Squalus maximus], Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskabs Skrifter, 1765, vol. 3, pp. 33–49), feed by gaping their mouths and gill slits, greatly reorienting their cranial skeletons to filter food from water.

Study on aerodynamic characteristics of tilting wing unmanned aerial vehicle in transition state

open access: yesHangkong gongcheng jinzhan
In response to the problem of the continuous tilting transition process of the configuration of unmanned aerial vehicle with complex and unsteady aerodynamic characteristics, the real blade is replaced with a virtual propeller disk model, the rotor flow ...

A Review of Morphing Aircraft

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, 2011
Aircraft wings are a compromise that allows the aircraft to fly at a range of flight conditions, but the performance at each condition is sub-optimal. The ability of a wing surface to change its geometry during flight has interested researchers and designers over the years as this reduces the design compromises required. Morphing is the short form for

Mapping Ancient Structures and Demonstrating Integrated Archaeological Geophysics at Huacas de Moche, Peru

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT At the Huacas de Moche (HdM), one of the most prominent archaeological sites in Trujillo, Peru, the needs of an expanding modern community are in direct conflict with the desire to preserve the wealth of archaeological information. The undetermined extent of the HdM site introduces disputes in land usage where potential archaeological features

SARchaeological Prospection: Synthetic Aperture Radar for the Reconstruction and Mapping of Temperate Floodplain Environments

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Temperate river floodplains present a significant challenge for archaeologists, as cultural and palaeoenvironmental remains are often difficult to locate but can be exceptionally well preserved, especially where groundwater levels are high. In these alluvial environments, the deposition of thick, fine‐grained sediments has potential to deeply ...
