Aircraft Conceptual Design Using Vehicle Sketch Pad [PDF]

open access: yes48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2010
Vehicle Sketch Pad (VSP) is a parametric geometry modeling tool that is intended for use in the conceptual design of aircraft. The intent of this software is to rapidly model aircraft configurations without expending the expertise and time that is typically required for modeling with traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages.

An Integrated Method for Determination of the Oswald Factor in a Multi-Fidelity Design Environment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Aircraft conceptual design often focuses on unconventional configurations like for example forward swept wings. Assessing the characteristics of these configurations usually requires the use of physic based analysis modules.

Outstanding 1200 °C Oxidation Resistance in a Novel Multi‐Principal Element Alloy via Lattice Distortion‐Induced Diffusion Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The unique lamellar structure of the eutectic alloy promotes selective oxidation of Al initially, while lattice distortion‐induced diffusion suppression slows oxide growth during steady state. Combining these strategies, a Multi‐Principal Element Alloy with excellent oxidation resistance at 1200℃ was designed.

Conceptual Design of Hybrid-Electric Aircraft

open access: yes, 2022
This work aims at establishing a design procedure applicable to hybrid-electric, full-electric, or conventional aircraft. Firstly, the author introduces a mathematical model to describe the dynamics of the propulsive system. Then, the effects associated with the new propulsive system introduced are measured.

A Janus‐Like Bio‐Inspired Strategy for 3D‐Printed Bimetallic Metamaterials with Excellent Thermal‐Protection and Load Bearing Capacity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A Janus‐like bio‐inspired strategy is proposed for integrally 3D‐printed bimetallic metamaterials. Inspired by shell bilayers, a heat‐resistant AlSiFeMnNiMg alloy and a SiC‐reinforced AlSi10Mg with different SiC volume fractions are arranged as an architected pair.

Active Metamaterials with Tunable Shear Nonreciprocity and Nonlinear Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Active gear‐based mechanical metamaterials enable simultaneous control of translational and torsional stiffnesses by 30–100×, break shear reciprocity under positive versus negative loads, broadly tune resonant frequencies, and offer programmable dynamic responses.

Open Vehicle Sketch Pad Aircraft Modeling Strategies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Geometric modeling of aircraft during the Conceptual design phase is very different from that needed for the Preliminary or Detailed design phases. The Conceptual design phase is characterized by the rapid, multi-disciplinary analysis of many design ...
