Visualization Methodologies in Aircraft Design [PDF]

open access: yes10th AIAA/ISSMO Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization Conference, 2004
This paper reviews aspects of low dimensional visualization methods, which are used currently in aerodynamic design and how these can be extended to higher dimensions. The shortcomings in current visualization methods are described and methods introduced which extend other visualization methods to this application.

Hypersonic aircraft design [PDF]

open access: yes
A hypersonic aircraft is designed which uses scramjets to accelerate from Mach 6 to Mach 10 and sustain that speed for two minutes. Different propulsion systems were considered and it was decided that the aircraft would use one full scale turbofan-ramjet.

Superelastic High‐Entropy Oxide Ceramic Aerogels for Thermal Superinsulation and Sealing at Extreme Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A high‐entropy oxide ceramic of (Gd1/2Lu1/2)2(Ti1/3Zr1/3Hf1/3)2O7 is prepared through a molecular synthesis route of pyrolytic solid‐solution reactions. The architectured nanofiber aerogel manifests unprecedented thermomechanical properties, including superelastic compressibility of 98% from −196 to 1500 °C, and thermal superinsulation capacity (24.14 ...

Magnetic Flux Guides by Material Extrusion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetic flux guidance can increase inductive coupling and forces for magnetic sensors, actuators, and transducers. Here, a magnetic material extrusion method is used to fabricate flux concentration structures of arbitrary shapes with a magnetic permeability of 42. In line with simulation analysis, experimental results show that these materials provide

A Novel Metal Foam‐Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell With High Specific Power

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) employing metal foam supports with an ultrahigh porosity of 90% and average pore size of 100 µm are successfully fabricated. The metal foam architecture significantly enhances gas diffusion coefficients, effectively reducing concentration polarization while simultaneously decreasing areal mass.

Deformable Eutectic Alloy With Near‐Theoretical Yield Strength via Hierarchical Nanoscale Multiphases and Sessile Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A CoCrFeNiTa0.4 eutectic high‐entropy alloy achieves a near‐theoretical yield strength of 2.6 GPa with 13.6% plasticity. This breakthrough stems from a hierarchical nanostructure (FCC‐Laves lamellae with L12/D022 precipitates), which alleviates the inter‐phase modulus/hardness mismatch through synergistic strengthening and toughening, guiding the ...

Aircraft Winglet Design

open access: yes, 2020
Aerodynamic drag can be decreased with respect to a wing’s geometry, and wingtip devices, so called winglets, play a vital role in wing design. The focus has been laid on studying the lift and drag forces generated by merging various winglet designs with a constrained aircraft wing.
