An aircraft noise adaptation model is being developed at Langley Research Center to account for the variability in the responses of subjects participating in noise experiments. The principal concept of the model is a measured “aircraft adaptation level” which represents a noise annoyance calibration for each individual. The model assumes that annoyance

Although it has been generally accepted that noise control is of great importance around airports, little consideration has been given to the instrumentation concept. The purpose of this article is to discuss various requirements to noise monitoring systems with respect to flexibility, reliability and operation.

Noise has been an issue for airport communities and passengers since the advent of commercial air transport almost a century ago. Impressive gains have been made in aircraft noise control, but expectations are rising and air traffic will at least double in the next 20 years. Also, lighter composite structures pose a challenge for interior noise control.

Significant advances have been made during the past 45 years in the understanding of airplane interior noise. Noise sources and transmission paths are discussed, and methods for the prediction of interior noise are summarized. Noise control methods are reviewed, including recent work in active noise control.

Flight Operational Noise Internationally, noise due to flight operations in the vicinity of airports. Each nation has developed an individual system of assessment and criteria for judging acceptability or probable extents of annoyance arising from the community based on local conditions and experience.
