Airflow Characteristics through a Horizontal-Airflow Biofilter

2004, Ottawa, Canada August 1 - 4, 2004, 2004
A horizontal-airflow biofilter was constructed to evaluate the airflow characteristics through a horizontal biofilter bed. Based on data collected over two summers of operation, it can be concluded that horizontal movement of air through a biofilter bed is feasible.

Airflow Determination in a Horizontal Laminar Airflow Operating Room

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1974
The criteria used in the selection of a laminar airflow unit are presented. The unit acquired and installed is described. The air-velocity profiles are shown for the empty and occupied operating room, and the method for their determination is described. The study of the velocity profiles indicated the unit operated to the manufacturer's description and

Airflow Resistance of Airflow-Regulating Devices Described by Independent Coefficients

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 2001
Rehabilitation after laryngectomy includes more and more the use of airflow-regulating devices such as shunt valves (SVs), tracheostoma valves (TSVs), and heat and moisture exchange (HME) filters. In determining the quality of those devices, airflow resistance is a very important factor.

Reciprocating Nasal Airflow Resistances

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1984
Reciprocal changes in airflow resistance between nasal cavities are induced by lateral recumbency, and also by unilateral pressures to body surfaces in postures which avoid hydrostatic differences between sides. The reciprocating spontaneous nasal cycle in erect subjects and these nasal responses to lateral posture and pressure maintain total nasal ...

Nasal airflow after septorhinoplasty

Clinical Otolaryngology, 1994
The changes in nasal function which occur after septorhinoplasty for obstruction were investigated by anterior rhinomanometry in 15 subjects. Objective and subjective measures of outcome were compared. Anterior rhinomanometry was performed after nasal decongestion.

Characterization of nasal airflow

Clinical Otolaryngology and Allied Sciences, 1997
Nasal airflow and trans-nasal pressure difference was measured by active anterior rhinomanometry in 24 subjects. An analysis was undertaken to determine the 'goodness of fit' of two models used to characterize nasal airflow, one model by Broms and the other by O'Neill and Tolley.

Pharyngeal Airflow during Sleep

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1995
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sleep and nasal resistance on pharyngeal airflow in a group of healthy male adults without complaint of habitual snoring. Twelve subjects aged 21 to 60 years were studied in a sleep laboratory during exclusive nasal breathing.

Asbestos and Airflow Limitation

Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 1986
To assess the effect of asbestos on the airways, researchers studied 45 shipyard workers who were lifelong nonsmokers and had asbestos-related abnormalities seen on their chest roentgenograms. Patients with interstitial lung disease, bronchial asthma prior to asbestos exposure, recurrent pneumonias, or significant cardiovascular disease were excluded ...

Ultraclean Laminar Airflow ORs

AORN Journal, 1998
ABSTRACTTo minimize postoperative infections, ultraclean laminar airflow (LAF) units equipped with high‐efficiency particulate air filters developed for electronic and aerospace technology have been adapted for ORs. Traditionally, the airflow was either vertical or horizontal and, to function properly, encompassed extra side walls inside the OR ...
