Design of airfoils and cascades of airfoils
AIAA Journal, 1989This paper presents a method for generating blade shapes to be used as inputs to the direct- or inverse-bladedesign sequences. This method can generate subsonic or supersonic blades for compressors and turbines, or isolated airfoils, but the discussion in this paper is limited to subsonic-exit turbine blade rows. Gas-turbine blades are usually designed

Cylinder-Airfoil Interactions and the Effect on Airfoil Performance
2021From micro air vehicles flying in the wake of buildings to aircraft operating in ship airwakes, turbulent flows generate unsteady aerodynamic loads on airfoils that may promote structural failure, loss of flight control, and produce noise radiation. In order to develop engineering solutions capable of mitigating these effects, accurate force prediction

A Collocation Method for the Generalized Airfoil Equation for an Airfoil with a Flap
SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 1998The author considers the generalized airfoil equation \(\frac{1}{\pi}\oint_{-1}^1\frac{u(x)}{x-y}dx+\frac{1}{\pi}\int_{-1}^1k(y, x)u(x)dx=f(y)\), \(-1 < y < 1\), which governs the pressure across an airfoil oscillating in a wind tunnel; \(\oint\) denotes an integral defined in the Cauchy principal value sense, and \(u(x)\) is the unknown pressure jump ...

A multipoint inverse airfoil design method for slot-suction airfoils
13th Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 1995Owing to a renewed interest in advanced-concept transport aircraft with active boundary-layer control (suction and/or blowing), a generalized multipoint method for the inverse design of airfoils with slot suction in incompressible potential flow is presented. The results predicted by theory show good agreement with experiment.

Airfoil Design and Optimization
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2001AbstractThe aerodynamic efficiency of mildly swept wings is mainly influenced by the characteristics of the airfoil sections. The specific design of airfoils is therefore one of the classical tasks of aerodynamics. Since the airfoil characteristics are directly dependent on the inviscid pressure distribution the application of inverse calculation ...

Bézier presentation of airfoils
Computer Aided Geometric Design, 1987Bézier presentations and cubic spline presentations of NACA-4-digit airfoils are developed and their errors are discussed. The given representations may help to use the Bernstein-Bézier technique in the design process of wings.

Airfoils and Airfoil Systems of Finite Span
1935The subject of this Chapter is the investigation of the forces experienced by an airfoil of finite span and by airfoil systems. The basic idea for the following deductions has been indicated at the end of III 32. The only point we have to add is that in the case of a single wing of ordinary type we may substitute the lift per unit span l for Λ (see III

Airfoil gust response and the sound produced by airfoil-vortex interaction
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1984This paper contributes to the understanding of the noise generation process of an airfoil encountering an unsteady upwash. By using a fast Fourier transform together with accurate airfoil response functions, the lift-time waveform for an airfoil encountering a delta function gust (the indicial function) is calculated for a flat plate airfoil in a ...

Effect of airfoil thickness on gust–airfoil interaction noise
Physics of FluidsInteraction between turbulence and an airfoil is a significant aerodynamic noise source for many engineering applications when turbulence in the wake of upstream blades interacts with the leading edge of downstream blades. Modeling the oncoming turbulence as harmonic gusts is a common approach to study the noise generated by turbulence–airfoil ...
