Design of a supercritical airfoil
Journal of Aircraft, 1988This article treats the development of several transonic airfoils. The initial design, NPU2, was based on a specified shockless pressure distribution at given design conditions which were Mach number, Reynolds number, and lift coefficient. Wind-tunnel tests substantiated the design. They showed up, however, weak shock waves.

Airfoil Design and Optimization
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2001AbstractThe aerodynamic efficiency of mildly swept wings is mainly influenced by the characteristics of the airfoil sections. The specific design of airfoils is therefore one of the classical tasks of aerodynamics. Since the airfoil characteristics are directly dependent on the inviscid pressure distribution the application of inverse calculation ...

Design of airfoils and cascades of airfoils
AIAA Journal, 1989This paper presents a method for generating blade shapes to be used as inputs to the direct- or inverse-bladedesign sequences. This method can generate subsonic or supersonic blades for compressors and turbines, or isolated airfoils, but the discussion in this paper is limited to subsonic-exit turbine blade rows. Gas-turbine blades are usually designed

Airfoil design by optimization
Journal of Aircraft, 1977An airfoil design technique is described which uses an analytical method for representing the airfoil contour by Wagner functions and a computational procedure for obtaining the values of the coefficients of expansion. The method for approximating an airfoil contour by a Fourier-type series of Wagner functions is briefly outlined, and a flow chart for ...

On the Design of Thin Subsonic Airfoils
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1979The inverse problem, which determines an airfoil geometry given some specified surface pressure, is considered in the subsonic, thin-airfoil limit. The full governing equations are expanded in powers of the thickness ratio and solved to second-order.
