Holding a wing horizontal: Roles for muscles of the pectoral girdle other than the main two flight muscles

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
This report explores which muscles of the pectoral girdle are employed to allow birds to hold their wings horizontally with a level aerofoil surface during a glide. Abstract Whilst many birds glide briefly with wings held horizontally, some species maintain this posture for extended periods during soaring.

Design of a laminar-flow-control supercritical airfoil for a swept wing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
An airfoil was analytically designed and analyzed for a combination of supercritical flow and laminar flow control (LFC) by boundary layer suction. A shockless inverse method was used to design an airfoil and an analysis method was used in lower surface ...

Morphology and osteo‐histology of the weigeltisaurid wing: Implications for aerial locomotion in the world's first gliding reptiles

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
This study investigates the morphology and osteo‐histology of the wing skeleton of the world's first gliding reptiles, showing how it differs from those of extant gliding lizards, yet is also convergently similar. These findings pave the way for future biomechanical studies on the gliding locomotion of these emblematic fossil animals. Abstract The Late

A Degradable Bioinspired Flier with Aerogel‐Based Colorimetric Sensors for Environmental Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 15, 13 March 2026.
Biodegradable fliers are developed inspired by Tipuana tipu samaras, integrating cellulose nanocrystal aerogel (CNCa) sensors loaded with natural dyes for pH and ammonia detection. The lightweight, degradable fliers mimic natural morphology and aerodynamics, offering an eco‐friendly, scalable solution for in situ environmental monitoring after passive ...

Aerospace Engineering Undergraduate Laboratory Courses: A Systematic Review (1990–2025)

open access: yesComputer Applications in Engineering Education, Volume 34, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT This review examines the evolution of undergraduate aerospace engineering (AE) laboratories from 1990 to 2025, focusing on course formats, pedagogy, technology, and assessment. Once centered on traditional demonstration‐based exercises, AE laboratories have increasingly shifted toward hands‐on, project‐based, and hybrid physical‐virtual models

Numerical Investigation of Transonic Axial Compressor Rotor With Leading‐Edge Tubercles

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2026.
Amplitude, wavelength, and span‐wise location of the leading‐edge tubercles on a transonic NASA Rotor 37 compressor are numerically optimized. An increase in efficiency by 0.52% compared to the corresponding baseline rotor is observed. The location of the shockwave moves downstream of the rotor with 1.91% higher pressure.

Innovative Fluid Mechanics Education Through Augmented Reality and Interactive Learning

open access: yesProceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 26, Issue 1, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Traditional pedagogical setups in laboratories are often outdated and do not provide the necessary support for effective learning. Teaching fluid mechanics poses additional significant challenges, particularly due to the need to visualize invisible properties, like velocity vector fields (velocity) or scalar pressure fields in time‐dependent ...
