Turbine Airfoil Design Optimization
Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1996A new blade design methodology, which allows designers to react rapidly to changes in functional requirements of turbines and transition quickly from concept to design, has been discussed in this paper. This methodology reduces the design cycle time by creating a three-dimensional model of the blade, through concurrent design of multiple two ...

Airfoil design by optimization
Journal of Aircraft, 1977An airfoil design technique is described which uses an analytical method for representing the airfoil contour by Wagner functions and a computational procedure for obtaining the values of the coefficients of expansion. The method for approximating an airfoil contour by a Fourier-type series of Wagner functions is briefly outlined, and a flow chart for ...

Airfoil optimization by Evolution Strategies
2013 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, 2013This paper addresses subsonic airfoil optimization using Evolution Strategies (ES) and devises a means of defining the airfoil geometry that reduces unnecessary restrictions in the search space. The solution encoding uses Bezier Control Points to define the geometry of the airfoil, but does not restrict the movement of the control points as was common ...

Shape Optimization for Conforming Airfoils
44th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2003Interest in the design and development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has increased dramatically in the last two and a half decades. The Buckle-Wing UAV concept being developed in this research is designed to “morph” in a way which facilitates variations in wing loading, aspect ratio and wing section shapes.

Airfoil Design and Optimization
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2001AbstractThe aerodynamic efficiency of mildly swept wings is mainly influenced by the characteristics of the airfoil sections. The specific design of airfoils is therefore one of the classical tasks of aerodynamics. Since the airfoil characteristics are directly dependent on the inviscid pressure distribution the application of inverse calculation ...

Supersonic airfoil optimization
Journal of Aircraft, 1986A procedure for the optimization of supersonic airfoils is presented. A nonlinear, full-potential solver (NCOREL) is coupled with a numerical optimizer (CONMIN). The NCOREL code is a three-dimensional supersonic marching method, however, only two-dimensional (conical) results are used for the airfoil problem.

Horizontal Axis Hydroturbine Shroud Airfoil Optimization
2014The present work concerns the optimization of the shroud of an horizontal axis hydro turbine (HAHT). The main aim is to improve the hydro-turbine efficiency by designing a new shroud airfoil through an optimization process that maximize, as objective function, the power coefficient.

Optimized Natural-Laminar-Flow Airfoils
44th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2006A two-dimensional Newton-Krylov aerodynamic shape optimization algorithm has been modied to incorporate the prediction of laminar-turbulent transition. Modications to the discrete-adjoint gradient computation were required to allow the optimization algorithm to manipulate the transition point through shape changes.

Steam Turbine Airfoil Design Optimization
Volume 6: 18th Computers in Engineering Conference, 1998Abstract In designing steam turbine airfoil, a continuous slope (second derivative) is desirable to prevent local flow circulation and a minimum curvature is necessary to decrease turbulence. To meet this requirement, the design program uses fifth and sixth order.
