Error in ERA5 2‐m temperature identified using GraphCast

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We identify a recurrent error in ERA5 2‐m temperature over the Ethiopian Highlands that occurs predominantly at 0600 UTC on ≈7%$$ \approx 7\% $$ of dates. The artefact is caused by the 2D optimal‐interpolation scheme assimilating temporally displaced surface reports (e.g., 0900 UTC) into the 0600 UTC analysis.

The Mediterranean Extreme Events Experiment and storm Harry in January 2026

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This article introduces the Mediterranean Extreme Events Experiment (M3E) – a new project consisting of partners from Europe and the United States – whose main objective is to improve the weather forecasting of extreme events in the Mediterranean region via the deployment of drifting buoys with barometers (shown).

Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right: Thermal Modulating Capacity of Different Sources of Groundwater Discharge to Salmon‐Bearing Streams

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Groundwater discharge plays a key role in maintaining habitat suitability for cold‐water fish by generating streamflow and modulating temperatures. However, the thermal influence depends on groundwater source depth and how far groundwater travels from the point of discharge to a receiving stream.

Real-Time Pedestrian Detection and Multi-Object Tracking in Complex Airport Scenes via Frequency-Aware and Mamba-Enhanced Representation

open access: yesIEEE Access
Real-time pedestrian detection and multi-object tracking (MOT) in complex airport surveillance scenarios present significant challenges, including drastic scale variation, frequent occlusion, cluttered backgrounds, and diverse motion dynamics.

Efficient and Accurate Spatio‐Temporal Population Monitoring of Mobile Animals Using Drones and Computer Vision

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Drones and computer vision offer an efficient way to estimate animal populations over localized areas, but surveys often require stitching many overlapping images together. If animals move during the survey, traditional orthomosaic‐based counting methods become unreliable, with some animals appearing in multiple locations while others appear not at all,

Three‐Year Propagation Experiment at Ku‐, Ka‐, and Q‐Band in French West Indies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT From January 2021 to December 2023, the Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) conducted a three‐year Earth‐space propagation measurement campaign in Guadeloupe. The experiment used beacon receivers deployed in Pointe‐à‐Pitre airport to record signals at 11.2, 19.7, and

Long‐Term Propagation Measurements in Madrid in a Q‐Band Satellite‐to‐Earth Link

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Q/V band (40/50 GHz) is gaining interest as satellite operators will need larger bandwidth to be able to provide their services, which are experiencing an increasingly high demand. An accurate characterization of the satellite‐to‐Earth propagation channel is of paramount importance to guarantee a high level of quality of service, by ...
