Modeling of austenite decomposition in an AISI 4140 steel
2009The final mechanical properties and also the distribution of residual stresses in a heat treated product, depend upon the various microstructural constituents. In heat treatment operations, in order to predict the final properties, it has become increasingly important to be able to predict the final microstructure distribution for a given thermal ...

Effect of cryogenic treatment on the hardness and tensile behaviour of AISI 4140 steel
International Journal of Microstructure and Materials Properties, 2011This paper deals with the influence of cryogenic treatment on the hardness and tensile behaviour of AISI 4140 steel. The impetus for studying the tensile properties of steels is to ensure that steels used in shafts and gears have sufficient tensile strength to prevent failure when they are subjected to tensile or fatigue loads, and to provide basic ...

Tribological Characteristics of Duplex Treated AISI 4140 Steel
2000In the present study samples of AISI 4140 steel pre-treated by plasma nitriding and coated by a hydrogen-free hard carbon film were investigated with respect to microhardness, surface roughness, residual stress, scratch adhesion and dry sliding wear resistance.

Wear behaviour of the AISI 4140 steel specimens with various surface conditions was tested against the DLC-coated boronized disc of AISI 4140 steel. Specific wear rate and coefficient of friction (COF) of the as-boronized (AB) pins at 100 and 150 N loads were substantially lower than the boronized–polished (B-P) pins.

Microstructure and Wear Behavior of TIG Surface-Alloyed AISI 4140 Steel
Tribology Transactions, 2010In this study, AISI 4140 steel surfaces were alloyed with preplaced SiC/C powders using a tungsten–inert gas (TIG) heat source. The effects of different production parameters on the microstructure, hardness, and wear resistance of the alloyed surfaces were investigated.

Wear Resistance of DCL Coating Deposited on Pretreated AISI 4140 Steel
Advanced Engineering Materials, 2000In the last few years, the application of nitrided steels as substrates for hard coatings has been increasingly reported. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings, in particular, have attracted significant attention owing to their desirable tribological properties.

Improvement of the fatigue strength of AISI 4140 steel by an ion nitriding process
Surface and Coatings Technology, 1995Abstract The influence of plasma nitriding on the fatigue behaviour of AISI 4140 low-alloy steel was investigated under varying process conditions of temperature (500–600 °C), time (1–12 h), heat treatment before ion nitriding (quenched and tempered, normalized) and gas mixture (50% H 2 50% N 2 ).

Room temperature nanoindentation creep of nitrocarburised AISI 4140 steel
Surface Engineering, 2019Room temperature indentation creep behaviour of different regions of nitrocarburised AISI 4140 steel is investigated by employing the nanoindentation creep testing method in the present study. A structure consisting of a compound layer, a diffusion layer and a substrate is observed in the nitrocarburised AISI 4140 steel.
