Plasma post oxidation of nitrocarburized AISI 4140 steel
Rare Metals, 2006Abstract Plasma nitrocarburizing and plasma oxidizing treatments were performed to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of AISI 4140 steel. Plasma nitrocarburizing was conducted for 3 h at 570 °C in the nitrogen, hydrogen and methane atmosphere to produce the ɛ-Fe 2–3 (N, C) phase.

Microstructure and Wear Behavior of TIG Surface-Alloyed AISI 4140 Steel
Tribology Transactions, 2010In this study, AISI 4140 steel surfaces were alloyed with preplaced SiC/C powders using a tungsten–inert gas (TIG) heat source. The effects of different production parameters on the microstructure, hardness, and wear resistance of the alloyed surfaces were investigated.

Wear Resistance of DCL Coating Deposited on Pretreated AISI 4140 Steel
Advanced Engineering Materials, 2000In the last few years, the application of nitrided steels as substrates for hard coatings has been increasingly reported. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings, in particular, have attracted significant attention owing to their desirable tribological properties.

Crack Arrest Toughness of Two High Strength Steels (AISI 4140 and AISI 4340)
Metallurgical Transactions A, 1982The crack initiation toughness (K c ) and crack arrest toughness (K a ) of AISI 4140 and AISI 4340 steel were measured over a range of yield strengths from 965 to 1240 MPa, and a range of test temperatures from -53 to +74°C. Emphasis was placed onK a testing since these values are thought to represent the minimum toughness of the steel as a function of

Corrosion fatigue behaviour of ion nitrided AISI 4140 steel
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2000Abstract Machine components suffer from corrosion degradation of fatigue characteristics and improvement can be attained by the application of a nitriding treatment, particularly to low alloy steels. In the present study, the effect of ion nitriding on corrosion fatigue performance of AISI 4140 steel has been investigated by conducting a series of ...

Hydrogen induced cracking in cold worked AISI 4140 steel welds
Journal of Materials Science, 1988The relative susceptibility to hydrogen induced cracking of cold deformed AISI 4140 steel welds was investigated. Controlled amounts of diffusible hydrogen were introduced into these weldments by utilizing the gas metal arc welding process with additions of hydrogen to the shielding gas.

Etching of prior austenite grain boundaries in AISI 4140 steel
Metallography, 1971Abstract AISI 4140 steel has been etched in aqueous picric acid containing a wetting agent to show up the prior austenite grain boundaries for a wide range of quenching and tempering treatments. Satisfactory etching procedures are outlined, and the efficacy of the etchant in delineating ferrite/pearlite microstructures is reported.

Minimum quantity lubrication-MQL turning of AISI 4140 steel alloy
Journal of Cleaner Production, 2013A number of studies have shown that compared to dry machining; MQL technique substantially enhances cutting performance in terms of increasing tool life and improving the quality of the machined parts. But, there have been a few investigations about the influence of process parameters on the results, such as MQL nozzle position and cutting parameters ...
