Gas metan murupakan gas yang bersifat lebih ringan di udara, mudah terbakar, tidak berbau dan tidak berwarna yang terdapat pada lapisan batu bara. Sehingga sering terjadi kecelakaan di tambang batu bara. Alat ukur  gas metan  hanya dapat mengukur keadaan kadar gas di dalam tambang batu bara dan tidak dapat dikirimkan ke luar tambang batu bara.
