Abstract Albania’s importance for our subject is not immediately obvious. With a population of3.3 million people, it is one of Europe’s tiniest nations, squeezed between Yugoslavia and Greece on the Adriatic coast. It is also one of the least-known. From 1944 till 1991 it was among the most isolated societies in the world.
