Shaping future forests: how can ecophysiology support climate‐smart forest management?

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 250, Issue 5, Page 2778-2813, June 2026.
Summary Climate change, particularly the associated increase in extreme events and disturbances, threatens the numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits that forests provide, both locally and globally. Heat and drought pose significant risks to forest ecosystems; the anticipated future climate is expected to exacerbate this trend ...

Climate Change Amplifies Rainfall Sensitivity to Deforestation in the Southern Amazon

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Rainfall among the Amazon has been shown to decline sharply once forest loss exceeds a critical threshold, typically around 30%–40%. However, future interactions between climate change and deforestation on this threshold remain unclear. We model their combined effects by 2050 on rainfall and temperature.

Simulating Shallow Mesoscale Overturning Circulations in the Trades With Kilometer‐Scale Earth System Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Shallow mesoscale overturning circulations (SMOCs) are ubiquitous in the trades, primarily triggered by mesoscale convective heating and influencing the organization of shallow cumuli. Accurate representation of SMOCs and their co‐variability with moisture is crucial for capturing mesoscale cloud organization in models and improving climate ...

Land‐Ocean Contrast in Low‐Cloud Adiabatic Fraction Modulated by Cloud Thickness and Droplet Size

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Cloud adiabatic fraction (fad) is crucial for understanding cloud microphysics and entrainment mixing. This study presents the first global satellite‐based assessment of land‐ocean contrasts in fad for low‐level clouds. Results show that land clouds have a lower fad (0.22) than oceanic clouds (0.35), consistent across all seasons.

Assessing Earth's Energy Imbalance Trend in the Early 21st Century in Two High‐Resolution Coupled Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Satellite observations since 2001 show an increasing Earth's energy imbalance (EEI) at the top of the atmosphere of 0.45 W m−2 dec−1, a trend understated in coupled climate models. We assess the 2001–2024 EEI trend in historical simulations of two high‐resolution coupled models, CM4X, a revised version of CM4.0, and CESM‐HR, a high‐resolution ...

Terrestrial Runoff Divides the Central Arctic Ocean and Shapes the Biologically Relevant Marine Lightscape

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract The Arctic Ocean is undergoing drastic changes in its sea ice cover, but is also optically complex. Observations from summer 2022 across the western Eurasian Basin, show increased colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption from terrestrial‐derived runoff within the Transpolar Drift (TPD) in the Amundsen Basin, extending down to a depth

The Role of Ice‐Rafted Debris (IRD) on Icebergs' Deterioration

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract During the last ice age, icebergs transported Ice‐Rafted Debris (IRD) more than 3,000 km across the North Atlantic. However, their effect on the deterioration of icebergs and thus where the deposits form is poorly understood. Laboratory experiments and a predictive model (with no fitting parameters) investigating the effects of sediment on ...
