Development and evaluation of a machine learning model to predict acute care for opioid use disorder among Medicaid enrollees engaged in a community‐based treatment program

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims To develop machine‐learning algorithms for predicting the risk of a hospitalization or emergency department (ED) visit for opioid use disorder (OUD) (i.e. OUD acute events) in Pennsylvania Medicaid enrollees in the Opioid Use Disorder Centers of Excellence (COE) program and to evaluate the fairness of model performance across racial ...

Outcomes for patients with alcohol‐related liver disease admitted to Scottish intensive care units 2010–2018

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Alcohol‐related liver disease is recognised as a major cause of liver‐related morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to report the prevalence of, and outcomes from, alcohol‐related liver disease after admission to ICUs in Scotland. Methods We performed a secondary data analysis using linked Scottish national databases of all adult ...

To Stent or Not to Stent: Is It a Question? Routine Trans‐Cystic Stenting Does Not Reduce Biliary Anastomotic Strictures Post‐Liver Transplantation

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Biliary anastomotic stricture (BAS) occurs with variable incidence following orthotopic liver transplantation. This study aimed to assess the risk factors for BAS in a large cohort and showed that routine trans‐cystic biliary stenting had no impact on its development.

Diabetes Mellitus in Patients With Autoimmune Hepatitis: Frequency, Risk Factors and Effect on Outcome

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
New‐onset DM occurred in 13% of patients with AIH, was related to older age, non‐Caucasian ethnicity, higher prednisolone dose, higher BMI at diagnosis and weight gain and was an independent predictor of all‐cause death/transplantation and of cirrhosis development, underlining the need to minimise steroid burden in AIH.

Lymphocyte‐to‐Monocyte Ratio as a Predictor of Recompensation in Patients With Decompensated Primary Biliary Cholangitis

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
This study identifies lymphocyte‐to‐monocyte ratio as a robust independent predictor for recompensation in decompensated primary biliary cholangitis patients, demonstrating superior predictive performance compared to other inflammatory markers and an accessible prognostic tool for clinical management.

Meta‐Analysis: Effects of Steatotic Liver Disease‐Associated Genetic Risk Alleles on Longitudinal Outcomes

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Genetic variants associated with risk of steatotic liver disease (SLD) may also influence clinical events. A systematic review and meta‐analysis consisting of 288,423 patients across 40 studies found that variants in PNPLA3, TM6SF2 and MBOAT7 are significantly associated with hepatic outcomes, with modest effects on extrahepatic outcomes.
