Evaluating alternative routes of using algal biomass for energy production [PDF]
Biomass is an excellent renewable energy source for alleviating the energy crisis and reducing the GHG emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. Since the microalgae can accumulate lipids in the cell, the concept of using algal biomass for biodiesel

This study shows that incorporating 5–10 wt.% Posidonia oceanica, with or without micro‐talc, in PBSA preserves thermal stability, modifying crystallization behavior, and maintains good filler dispersion and interfacial adhesion. Mechanical properties are moderately stiffened.

Harvesting of Hartbeespoort Dam micro-algal biomass through sand filtration and solar drying
Renewable energy sources such as biomass are becoming more and more important as alternative to fossil fuels. One of the most exciting new sources of biomass is microalgae.

Temporal community change in stream ecosystems varies by assemblage across US climates
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecosystem properties are temporally dynamic. Temporal variability has been shown to decrease with increasing levels of biological organization (i.e. from population to community and ecosystem levels).

NATURAL COTTON PRINTING WITH RED MACROALGAE BIOMASS OF GRACILARIA GRACILIS AND GRACILARIA CORNEA [PDF]
Environmental protection is gaining popularity in our society due to the accentuated and irresponsible use of natural resources. Consequently, measures need to be taken in all of the demanding industries, including the textile one, as more sustainable ...

Mobile consumers influence the shoreward edge of intertidal seagrass ecosystems
Ecological paradigms suggest that the environmentally stressful edge of a habitat is determined by physical factors. The work finds that, counter to these paradigms, an environmentally stressful edge can also be impacted by biotic interactions and are more complex than suggested.

Invasive goldfish trigger a regime shift in experimental lake ecosystems of varying trophic state
The pet trade distributes exotic animals around the globe that enrich human lives. However, some pets become pests when released into the wild. This study provides experimental evidence that goldfish will negatively affect native freshwater organisms and ecosystems.

Distinct waterbird species influence nutrient cycling through guano contributions in Great Lakes coastal wetlands. Waterbird‐derived nutrients favour distinct algal communities and wetland sediments rapidly remove waterbird nutrients via biogeochemical processes.

Using Algal Biomass as a Fertilizer
Algae can be used in a variety of wastewater systems to capture nutrients while fixing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. I conducted field trials at three locations in Oregon with both corn and potato crops to assess the agronomic value and ...
