Algebraic Combinatorics on Modes
2017In the mid-1970s, Alain Louvier worked out microtonal scales called modes of progressive transposition and used them in many musical works. These modes have similar properties to major modes and are related to diatonicism. Some of them were known by Ivan Wyschnegradsky and Georgy Rimsky–Korsakov, the grand-son of Nikolai.

On the Combinatorics of Free Algebras
1990In this survey paper I discuss recent results concerning free algebraic systems and I mention some old results which motivated them. There is no attempt to be comprehensive. The selection of topics is eclectic and personal but with a special emphasis on results of a combinatorial nature.

Miscellaneous Gems of Algebraic Combinatorics
2013An evil warden is in charge of 100 prisoners (all with different names). He puts a row of 100 boxes in a room. Inside each box is the name of a different prisoner. The prisoners enter the room one at a time. Each prisoner must open 50 of the boxes, one at a time. If any of the prisoners does not see his or her own name, then they are all killed.
