Augury and Forerunner: Real‐Time Feedback Via Predictive Numerical Optimization and Input Prediction

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Transient information generated by solver steps can inform future objective function minimization. In Augury, we explore the impact of predictive numerical optimization by using solver history to predict future minimization solutions, reducing computational resources needed to arrive at convergent states for a broad class of gradient‐based optimization

A Process‐Oriented Approach to Analyze Analysts' Use of Visualizations: Revealing Insights into the What, When, and How

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite Visual Analytics (VA) tools being essential for supporting data analysis, evaluating their use in real‐world analytical processes remains challenging. Traditional evaluation methods often overlook the nuanced and evolving nature of analysis processes and are not always suitable for investigating scenarios in which analysts combine ...

From farms to tables: Quantifying the effect of emissions pricing on Canadian food prices

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Agricultural Economics/Revue canadienne d'agroeconomie, EarlyView.
Abstract We examine the effect of emissions pricing on the cost of Canadian food. We describe emissions pricing policies relevant to the agriculture and food sectors and the differing design details of various provincial systems and the federal Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act.

Using constructed value of information to evaluate research needs in conservation strategy assumptions

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Conservation professionals often consider causal assumptions that connect strategic actions to results. Uncertainty in agricultural conservation assumptions was evaluated on three constructed value of information metrics: evidence, relevance, and reducibility. A sub‐set of assumptions was prioritized for learning‐based management.

The newsroom dilemma

open access: yesEconomic Inquiry, EarlyView.
Abstract Conventional wisdom suggests that competition in the modern digital environment pushes media outlets toward the early release of less accurate information. We show that this is not necessarily the case. Two opposing forces determine the resolution of the speed‐accuracy tradeoff: preemption and reputation.
